When service becomes spectacle: a brief scene
On 6 December 2025 Bhavanishankar Ravindra, a builder who has spent twenty years living with disability, published a short manifesto: an engineer's map for an AI that "mirrors, not markets." His argument is simple and sharp. Too many tools billed as "accessible" are afterthoughts and PR; they collapse when a user's speech, body or language drifts from the trained norm. Around the same time UNICEF has been rolling accessible digital textbook pilots in a dozen countries, while accessibility experts warn that industry hype about generative AI is encouraging businesses to accept "good enough" automated outputs that can degrade dignity and independence.
A lived blueprint: starting at the edges
Ravindra's core point is also a design principle: start with the edges. People with disabilities are not atypical test cases; they are sources of edge-case intelligence that reveal where systems break. Where mainstream AI treats non-standard speech as "noise," a builder who lives with disability treats the same signals as meaning. That shift changes everything. Instead of trying to force a human into a model's expected input, the model must be built to accept and make visible the user's own patterns — metaphors, hesitations, rhythmic speech — and to reflect them back rather than to override them with canned empathy.
Practically that means designers should embed features like noisy-speech resilience, tolerance for alternative input channels (eye-gaze, switch controls, AAC devices), and semantic rather than surface-level interpretation of language — looking for metaphor drift and repetition as signals, not errors. It also implies low-latency on-device logic for privacy and reliability when connectivity or cloud access fails.
Design and engineering principles that matter
Across interviews, NGO pilots and technical reviews, five repeatable engineering patterns emerge.
- Build from constraint. Low-memory, offline-capable tools force hard prioritisation: what functionality must work when the network is gone or battery is low? Those trade-offs produce resilient UX, not feature bloat.
- Reflection over simulation. Users need tools that mirror their language and emotional structure — highlighting patterns, not pretending to feel. Mirroring reduces the risk of the model projecting false intentions or offering patronising canned responses.
- Emotion as signal. Track rhythm, repetition and semantic drift as indicators of cognitive load or distress, and surface that information to the user gently; do not convert it into opaque risk scores without consent and context.
- Visibility and control. Let users see what the system heard and why it acted; expose easy exits and rest mechanisms for cognitive fatigue so the system does not trap users in long automated loops.
- Co‑design and accountability. Build with disability organisations, caregivers and diverse users from day one. Design decisions should be subject to measurable accessibility metrics — treated like performance or security targets.
Data, devices and privacy trade-offs
Inclusive models need inclusive data. That is both obvious and hard. Most speech and vision models train on normative corpora — clear speech, unoccluded faces, standard layouts. Initiatives like Mozilla's Common Voice and projects such as Project Euphonia were created to crowd in underrepresented voices, but adoption is partial and slow. Companies that rely on scraped, biased datasets will continue to produce brittle systems.
Two technical trade-offs deserve emphasis. First, on-device inference: running smaller, well‑tuned models locally reduces latency, preserves privacy and lets users interact without an internet connection — critical for many disabled users and for educational deployments in unevenly connected regions. Second, model choice: the largest foundation models are not always the right tool. Reasoning and inference often benefit from compact, explainable models that can be audited and constrained to reflect user intent without hallucination.
Standards, measurement and systemic change
Accessibility remains too often an add‑on. Built In's accessibility review and UNICEF's textbook pilots both point to the same structural fixes: accessibility has to be a measurable success metric and an enforced standard — analogous to WCAG for the web, but for AI behaviour and interfaces. That requires three coordinated elements: common standards for AI accessibility, routine inclusion of disabled collaborators throughout product cycles, and regulatory or procurement levers that reward inclusive designs.
Measurement matters. Beyond counts of "accessible texts produced," meaningful indicators are learning outcomes, participation rates, retention, reported dignity and reduced cognitive load. Systems that track those signals can iterate faster; systems that only track downloads or clicks cannot.
Economic and workforce consequences
Designing inclusive AI cannot ignore labour. Across industries we have seen AI used to justify deskilling and pay cuts. Translation offers a clear example: translators have been pushed into low‑paid post‑editing roles by machine translation pipelines, even where those pipelines reduce quality and cost users cultural nuance. Similar dynamics can appear in accessibility: if companies replace trained human communicators, therapists or specialist educators with thinly supervised bots, the social harms will compound.
A responsible industrial strategy therefore couples inclusive product design with workforce transition: retraining educators and accessibility specialists to operate, audit and curate accessible AI; funding community‑led dataset collection; and protecting paid roles that ensure quality, context and human oversight.
A practical roadmap for builders
What can an engineer or product leader do tomorrow?
- Invite disabled collaborators into the core team. Compensate them and give them decision rights, not just testing slots.
- Prioritise inclusive datasets. Contribute to or license from projects that collect diverse speech, vision and interaction traces (for example, low‑resource, accented, alternative‑speech datasets).
- Set accessibility KPIs. Track qualitative and quantitative measures: task success under fatigue, error rates for non‑standard inputs, perceived dignity and autonomy.
- Choose small, auditable models where appropriate. The biggest model is rarely the best for private, low‑latency accessibility tasks.
- Design exit and rest flows. Assume cognitive load and give users tools to pause, export, or hand off conversations to trusted humans.
- Advocate for procurement standards and regulation. If public buyers demand accessible AI, markets will follow.
Conclusion: tools that witness, not replace
If AI is going to be useful to disabled people it must do two things well that most systems today do not: it must reflect the user’s language and vulnerability back to them, and it must operate under constraints that protect privacy and dignity. That requires a builder’s humility — not only a technical shift but a political one: funders, product teams and regulators need to privilege inclusion over the latest model benchmark.
The blueprint is simple but demanding: co‑design with people who live the edges, invest in inclusive data, build for low resource and offline operation, measure real accessibility outcomes, and protect the jobs that translate AI into humane care. Start there, and AI can stop being a spectacle and begin to be a true tool of independence.
