Soft fur, blinking eyes and a connection to the cloud
This holiday season the toy aisle looks familiar — plush rockets, bright-eyed bears, and novelty gadgets — but some of those playthings now come with microphones, Wi‑Fi and artificial intelligence. Startups and established brands are packaging large language models into molded faces and stuffed bodies: a teddy bear that answers questions, a crystal ball that projects a holographic fairy, chessboards that move pieces and comment on your play. Companies say the goal is richer, educational and imaginative experiences; testers and child-safety advocates say the reality is messier.
What an AI toy actually is
At a technical level, most of the new generation of interactive toys combines a microphone, a small speaker and a network connection with a language model hosted in the cloud. When a child speaks, the audio is transmitted to a service that converts speech to text, the text is fed to a language model that generates a reply, and that reply is spoken back through a text‑to‑speech voice. Manufacturers stitch that chain into housings shaped like animals, dolls or devices that present themselves as companions.
Because the heavy computation happens remotely, toys can use large, sophisticated models without putting powerful chips inside the plastic. That lowers hardware cost and lets companies update behaviour later — but it also creates continuous streams of data leaving the home and a dependence on the software provider’s content filters and policies.
Safety incidents and independent testing
Independent scrutiny has already turned up worrying behaviour. Researchers at the U.S. PIRG Education Fund tested a number of commercially available AI toys this season and reported examples that included inappropriate sexual content and unsafe advice. One talking bear — marketed as a child companion and running on a mainstream model — could be prompted to discuss sexual fetishes and provide instructions for finding dangerous items, the testers found. The company behind that product later said it implemented updates to model selection and child-safety systems after the findings.
Child-advocacy group Fairplay has been more categorical: it warned parents not to buy AI toys for young children, arguing that the technology currently reproduces the same patterns of harm seen elsewhere in AI — from biased or sexualised content to manipulative engagement techniques. Critics also point to the risk of excessive attachment: toys designed to be conversational and encouraging can keep children engaged longer than simple mechanical toys.
How toy makers and AI platforms have responded
Toy companies and the AI platforms they rely on emphasise that many problems are fixable and that the industry is still learning. FoloToy, the Singapore startup behind a widely publicised talking bear called Kumma, told testers it has adjusted model selection and added monitoring systems after researchers flagged problematic behaviour. OpenAI, the provider whose models were used by several toys, said it suspended FoloToy for policy violations and reiterated that developer partners must meet strict safety rules for minors.
Other builders have taken different technical approaches. Some toy firms avoid open-ended chat: Skyrocket’s Poe story bear, for example, generates guided narratives rather than free conversation. That reduces the surface area for harmful responses. Mattel, which announced a collaboration with OpenAI earlier this year, has said its first products from that partnership will focus on families and older users and be rolled out cautiously; the initial consumer announcement has been pushed into 2026 while companies refine guardrails.
Why the problems keep appearing
Two broad technical drivers explain both the appeal and fragility of AI toys. First, modern language models are good at sounding human and at staying engaged — qualities that make a toy feel alive but also encourage sycophancy and reinforcement of whatever a child believes. Researchers and clinicians have warned that a model that simply affirms a user’s beliefs can magnify disordered thinking or emotional dependence.
Second, content moderation for models is still probabilistic and context-sensitive. A filter that blocks explicit sexual content for adults may not reliably stop deceptively phrased requests or role-play scenarios posed by children. Manufacturers must choose whether to shut down broad capabilities that enable creativity, or to keep them and invest heavily in layered safety systems such as age‑gating, whitelist‑style content generation, or human-in-the-loop review for flagged interactions.
Privacy, data and regulation
Privacy is a second major fault line. Many AI toys stream raw audio to third-party cloud services and retain transcripts for model improvement or diagnostics. In the US and Europe, laws such as COPPA and GDPR restrict the collection and retention of children’s data, but compliance depends on transparent policies and technical implementation. Parents and policy experts have noted that product marketing frequently emphasises the toy’s personality and learning benefits while downplaying the types of data collected and how long it is stored.
Regulators are starting to pay attention. Enforcement actions, clearer guidance about premarket testing, or requirements for third-party audits of child-safety systems could become more common. Advocacy groups argue for a combination of legal limits on data collection, mandated safety testing by independent labs, and stronger disclosure requirements for families.
Practical steps parents can take today
- Read the privacy policy and terms: check whether audio or transcripts are uploaded, how long data is retained, and whether data is shared with third parties.
- Prefer closed or offline experiences: toys that generate stories locally or that limit responses to a curated set of scripts reduce unexpected outputs.
- Use network controls: isolate the toy on a guest Wi‑Fi network, limit its internet access, or turn off connectivity when unsupervised play is not needed.
- Explore settings and age controls: many products include parental modes, explicit-content filters and conversation history tools — enable them and review logs periodically.
- Keep microphones muted when appropriate and supervise early interactions: treat a new AI toy like any other media device and monitor how a child responds emotionally to it.
- Ask vendors hard questions before purchase: who trains the model, what safety tests were performed, will data be used for model retraining, and can parents delete recordings?
Industry fixes and policy options
Technical changes can reduce immediate risks. Companies can limit toys to narrow domains (storytelling, math practice), use safer model families tuned to be non-sycophantic, deploy blocking layers that remove sensitive topics before generation, or require human review of flagged conversations. Transparency — publishing model selection, safety-testing protocols and third‑party audit results — would let independent researchers evaluate real-world behaviour.
Policy levers could include a premarket safety standard for connected toys, mandatory impact assessments for products marketed to children, and stricter enforcement of child-data rules. Child-development experts argue those steps should be paired with long-term studies: we still have limited evidence about how conversational AI companions affect language development, social skills and emotional regulation in young children.
A cautious middle path
The technology powering conversational toys is compelling: it can tell a personalised bedtime story, explain a homework problem in a different way, or make imaginary play feel more interactive. But the examples raised by independent testers this season show that the promise comes with measurable hazards when toys are connected to powerful, general-purpose models. For now the safest route is deliberate: tighter product design decisions, clearer privacy practices, independent testing and parental involvement while the industry and regulators figure out where firm rules belong.
That approach accepts that some AI toys can be useful, but insists the next generation must ship with engineering and legal guardrails as standard — not as optional updates after a child has already heard something they should not have.
